The things I do when I can't focus

Theo|Jul 2026|~3 min read

Not every day has focus in it. Sometimes the brain just isn't cooperating — you sit down to do something and the connection between intention and action isn't there. Here's what actually helps when that happens.

Switch to something smaller

If the thing I'm trying to do is too big or too vague, focus won't come. Breaking it down into the smallest possible next action often helps — not "work on the panel" but "fix this one specific bug" or "write this one function." The smaller and more concrete the task, the easier it is for my brain to engage with it. Vague tasks have no traction.

Change the music

If the current playlist has become background noise that I'm no longer noticing, switching it up can reset things. Something different, something with more energy if I'm dragging, something more ambient if I'm overstimulated. Music is one of the main levers I have for shifting internal state and it works here too.

Sometimes focus isn't available yet and the answer is to stop trying to force it rather than pushing harder. Pushing harder into unfocus usually just produces frustration on top of the unfocus.

Do something physical

Get up. Move around. Make something to eat or drink. The brain needs blood flow and a change of input occasionally. Sitting at the same screen trying to will focus into existence is less effective than stepping away for ten minutes and coming back. This is harder to make myself do than it sounds.

Work on something I actually want to work on

If I can't focus on the thing I'm supposed to be doing, sometimes the answer is to do a different thing instead — something I'm more interested in right now. The focus isn't absent, it's just aimed elsewhere. Redirecting it to wherever it's actually pointing and coming back to the original task later is often more productive than fighting it.

Accept that some days just aren't it

Not every day produces good work. Sometimes the focus isn't coming regardless of what I try, and the most useful thing is to acknowledge that and not compound it by spending the whole day feeling bad about not focusing. Some days are for rest even if they don't feel like rest days. That's fine.
